Businesses goals and objectives are a critical part of ensuring success particularly in the current competitive environment we work in.

We often talk about business plans being important but these are really the map or outline of how the business will achieve certain goals. Therefore it is critical to set the target so the plan meets the end needs.

A plan can change, as can goals. There is however always a point where you can measure how successful you have been as the goal is an end point, if often only for a moment.

So what should your goals look like - this will depend on the owners ambitions, staff and resources available and many other factors particular to the business however every goal should be SMART.

A SMART goal is:

• Specific, Succinct and simple
• Measurable - can you tell when you have achieved it
• Achievable - but not to easily
• Relevant - to your business
• Timely - set specific dates to achieve by.

If you can establish business goals along the above concepts you will be well on the way to enabling your business plan to be modified to ensure success. Finally always remember to continue to reset goals once you have achieved so you continue to lift the performance of your business.
